Warm cuddles on cold mornings

Early morning is my ideal workout time, but I’ve been having trouble getting out of bed most days, largely because one or more cats are still on the bed. They used to make getting up easier – as soon as I was awake, the cats would run around the room demanding breakfast. That has changed in the last couple years, particularly with Arwen who likes curling up just under the covers, resting on my arm. And she’s staying there even after I wake up.

It’s not just her though. Diane is usually by my waist at that point, sometimes still curled up with June, and Zuko is usually by my feet. The other morning, after I woke up and was reading news updates, Diane got out of bed, walked to the other end of the house to deposit a hairball… and then came back to bed! (It wasn’t on the bed or on carpet, so I’m not complaining.) Even June, our most prolific meal howler, on occasion climbs back onto the bed instead. Not for long, mind you, but she does.

My crack-of-dawn workouts are suffering as a result, but damn, they’re cute.

Take the week off, says Zuko

It’s been a week here. You’d think I’d get ahead on the blog with a three-day weekend, but it was painfully cold all weekend (wind chills down to the negative thirties Fahrenheit) and there was a lot to do, including taking June and Diane to their annual checkups. So enjoy a cute photo of Zuko.

Cat photos!

I have several things I wanted to write about this week, but alas, this cold I picked up in Montreal is knocking my socks off (well, if I usually wore socks around the house). So you get cat photos! The first is a rare occurrence: all four cats resting on the sofa. It’s rare because Diane usually growls anytime she notices Arwen trying to settle near her, even when Arwen’s actually trying to curl up nearby with June.

A rare sighting, four cats sitting peacefully on the sofa.

I have multiple hunt & feed style feeders for the cats. Diane, being a more dignified (and slower) eater, will not compete with the other cats for food, so she gets her bit of dry food separately while the others get to work for it. In this case, they’re hunting in a light bulb-shaped toy that wobbles.

Three girls napping

The week got away from me and I have an odd collection of mental distractions at the moment, so I’m sharing one of my stress relievers today. In other words… a cat photo!

Three cats napping on a sofa filled with pillows and Captain America shield blankets: Diane (black and white), June (tortoiseshell), and Arwen (white and black).

This is literally the view from my work desk many afternoons. Every so often, I’ll look over and smile at however they’re piled on the sofa today.

A busy week brings cat photos

Despite being a short work, it’s been crazily busy, so I’m sharing some cat photos.

Zuko, our youngest cat, perched on the fridge with his paws solidly resting on the door, with a look that says "Don't you dare open it, peasant."

Don’t you just love Zuko’s look, like he’ll be outraged if I open the fridge door? (Why no, he’s not supposed to sit on the fridge, but the new fridge is taller and I’d have to grab a step stool if he sits anywhere other than the very front.)

Zuko and Diane on an unmade bed with a combination of Doctor Who sheets, comforter, and a snow leopard blanket. Zuko has his front paws stretched out to the edge of the bed.

You can’t tell in most of the photos of him, but Zuko is super long and he likes stretching out… though not usually on the sofa. (He also likes chewing on the leopard print blanket in this photo while pawing at it and purring.)

From left to right: Diane, a black and white cat, curled up on a Princess Bridge blanket, leaning against a crocheted Totoro pillow with a crocheted Settlers of Catan pillow above it; June, a tortoiseshell cat and Arwen, a white and black cat, curled up together on one side of a crocheted Captain America shield blank with a TARDIS pillow behind them; Zuko curled up on the other side of the same blanket and partially resting on a fluffy whitish blanket.

In the mornings, the cats tend to spread out across the house to different napping spots. In the afternoons though, they gradually make their way to the sofa with careful placement. Diane will growl at Arwen if she’s not fully settled yet, and Arwen is careful not to curl up by Zuko unless that’s the only remaining spot.

WorldCon thoughts postponed, replaced by cat photos

My intention for this week’s blog post was to write about Chicon 8, the first WorldCon I’ve attended. Unfortunately, despite the convention’s rock solid policies (proof of Covid vaccinations was required for on-site attendees, and masks were required except when actively eating or drinking), we managed to come home with what appears to be a mild case of Covid. This is, not surprisingly, affecting my energy levels… and my ability to swallow without wincing. Hot tea with honey helps. Actually hot water with honey does too, depending on my mood.

Arwen, a white and black cat, sitting on a Backyardigans blanket on top of a box of puzzles

Hopefully I’ll be able to write that post up over the weekend, as we’ll still be quarantining. Meanwhile, here’s a tiny glimpse at packing with cats. Before the convention, Arwen made herself comfortable on a blanket covering the puzzles destined for Chicon’s Teen Lounge. (How many puzzles were assembled in the Teen Lounge during the four days it was open? I have it on good authority that none of them were. Instead, they were busy playing games and coloring and generally hanging out with other people in their age group.)

Arwen, a white and black cat, sitting in the empty suitcase on the living room floor

There were several instances of cats in the suitcase as I was unloading, but I was too busy to take most of those photos. Finally, when I was done emptying it and about to clear it from the living room, Arwen made herself comfortable taking a bath in one corner. (The suitcase eventually left the room, but has not made it up to the attic yet.)

Funny cat stories

I was asked recently why all of my kitten photos are of Zuko napping. Typically, if he’s not napping, I’m too busy stopping him from misbehaving to take a photo! But I have four cats, and the kitten is certainly not the only source of amusement.

About a week ago, I had just settled into bed with three of the cats when the fourth one, June, started howling from the living room. This wasn’t the normal “feed me” cry (or even her intent to use the litter box meowl), it was more of a “something is terribly wrong” anguished howl. Zuko perked up and jumped off the bed; I followed with a flashlight. As we reached the edge of the living room, June stopped howling and calmly walked to the sofa… and stood there, looking at the pillow that I had left in her normal spot. Well, yes, the rest of the sofa was available, but her spot wasn’t. I moved the pillow and went back to bed.

We have a projector and white screen rather than a TV. Zuko is the only cat who is consistently interested in what’s appearing on a screen, whether it’s my phone, computer, or the white screen. This isn’t normally a problem, but occasionally he’ll launch himself at the white screen… either grabbing at the handle, or actually attacking something onscreen. This is particularly awkward during my workouts… he’ll launch himself at the Centr.com trainer (usually Luke… I don’t know why) while I’m planking or otherwise not in a position to stop him. Oddly, when we’re watching a show, he’s fairly good about attacking the antagonist.

At night, Arwen likes sleeping under the covers. This isn’t a problem if I’m already awake enough to lift the covers for her… and otherwise, she’ll make sure to wake me up for it. In typical cat fashion, this usually means walking across my face in the middle of the night.

Diane is the most likely of the older cats to play with Zuko, and even that (at least, willingly) is infrequent. I was somewhat amused on a recent occasion when she jumped up on my bed mid-afternoon and started to play with him. A couple minutes later, he was gone and she was settled in his sun spot, so perhaps it wasn’t as friendly as it looked.

The cats are definitely not allowed on the counter, especially when food is being prepared. Arwen’s so unclear on this concept that she gets locked in my room as soon as we start preparing food. Zuko’s a bit better behaved, though he usually ends up in the room with her before food is served, sometimes just because he’s underfoot and we’re worried about tripping over him while carrying hot thigns. Diane and June are almost always well-behaved… but when Diane isn’t, despite being the largest cat in the house, she manages to jump on the counter silently. And she’s the only one who cares that she gets in trouble for it… she’ll slink off, hiding under the table, then rushing past us to go sit on the sofa with a guilty look on her face, curling up as if she had been resting on the sofa the whole time.

And that’s why I don’t usually have action shots of the cats.

Ups & downs to adulting

I was at the grocery store the other day, forlornly noticing that my preferred brand of peanut butter was absent from the shelf. The space was there, but not a single jar of crunchy (my preference) or creamy peanut butter in that brand were available. I sighed and reached for my purse… picking a different brand requires glasses, which is definitely a downside to adulting. Not just because I now read ingredients where I didn’t used to, but because I can barely read most of the label other than the brand name and the creamy/crunchy part. After some grumbling – mostly wondering why there’s anything other than peanuts and a minute amount of salt, and definitely not buying the one with sugar added – I settled on a new jar. (Don’t worry, nobody was staring at me… I tend to do my grocery shopping at the crack of dawn, when the store is mostly empty.)

It led me to consider other ups and downs I’ve encountered recently. I had an emergency dentist visit last month which resulted in a root canal, and anybody who’s experienced that sort of dental pain can tell you it’s definitely a down. But it had an up side… I had just enough in my Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to cover it, which means it wasn’t hitting a credit card bill and I managed to clear my FSA for the year.

For any readers outside the US, an health-related FSA account is money set aside before income tax calculations, and can only be used on health expenses. If unspent after the year plus grace period (in this case, 3 months into next year), you lose the money. In addition to actual medical appointments, it can be spent on some related items, with weird exceptions like covering dentist visits but not toothbrushes. It can lead to weird shopping on FSAStore.com and related sites at the end of the grace period, as you decide just how many first aid kits you really need.

Zuko, perched on the top level of the cat tree. Across the room, two toy mice near the garage door.

Our kitten is definitely an up… but like every cat, Zuko has his personality quirks. His is so excited about toys, particularly mice, and this one type of mouse gets… special… treatment. Watching him drop a toy mouse in the water is funny, until you realize how absorbent it is and see the trail of water he leaves as he drags it around. It’s downright hilarious to see him pause as he runs in from the garage to his bowl; if there’s a mouse between them, he will pick it up and carry it to the bowl. Yes, he sets it in the bowl. *sigh* Dropping one of his mice into my martini… that was definitely a down.

Ups and downs are a part of life… try to laugh when you can, even if there’s a toy mouse in your martini.
